Samsung R&D Institute, Bangalore (SRI-B), the largest R&D center of Samsung outside South Korea, has set up a state-of-the-art artificial intelligence, machine learning and data engineering lab jointly with Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Vellore, one of the leading engineering institutes in India. The lab, named ‘Samsung AI Lab@VIT’, aims to provide a platform for students and faculty members of VIT to collaborate with SRI-B engineers on cutting-edge research and development projects in the domains of AI, ML and data engineering.
The Samsung AI Lab@VIT was inaugurated on December 1, 2023, by Dr. Dipesh Shah, Managing Director of SRI-B, and Dr. G. Viswanathan, Chancellor of VIT, in the presence of other dignitaries and officials from both the organizations. The lab is spread over 4,000 sq. ft. and is equipped with advanced hardware and software facilities, such as high-performance computing systems, AI and ML frameworks, data processing and visualization tools, and cloud services.
The lab will offer various opportunities for students and faculty members of VIT to work on real-world problems and solutions using AI, ML and data engineering techniques. Some of the areas of focus include computer vision, natural language processing, speech recognition, recommender systems, and data analytics. The lab will also conduct workshops, seminars, hackathons, and training programs to enhance the skills and knowledge of the participants. The lab will also facilitate joint publications and patents by the researchers from both the sides.
Dr. Dipesh Shah, Managing Director of SRI-B, said, “We are delighted to partner with VIT, one of the premier engineering institutes in India, to set up the Samsung AI Lab@VIT. This lab is a testament to our commitment to foster a culture of innovation and excellence in India, and to nurture the young talent in the fields of AI, ML and data engineering. We hope that this lab will serve as a hub for students and faculty members of VIT to collaborate with our engineers and create impactful solutions for the society and the industry.”
Dr. G. Viswanathan, Chancellor of VIT, said, “We are honored to join hands with Samsung, a global leader in technology and innovation, to establish the Samsung AI Lab@VIT. This lab will provide a unique opportunity for our students and faculty members to learn from the experts and work on the latest technologies and trends in AI, ML and data engineering. We are confident that this lab will enhance the quality of education and research at VIT, and will also contribute to the development of the nation.”
The Samsung AI Lab@VIT is the third such initiative by SRI-B in India, after setting up similar labs with KLE Technological University in Hubballi1 and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati2 earlier this year. These labs are part of Samsung’s vision of #PoweringDigitalIndia, which aims to empower the youth of India with digital skills and opportunities, and to create a strong innovation ecosystem in the country.
